LEONARDO IN FORCE WORKSHOP 3

Introduction and Aims

This is the third and last workshop of participants in Leonardo project to identify and supply the training and knowledge needs of European trade union works council members .A key element of project has been an electronic conference system which participants have used to communicate ideas and training materials in the periods between workshops.

The aim of this final workshop is to bring to bear the collective expertise of a group on the materials already produced though the project lifetime. Particular emphasis will be placed on evolution tools. The main focus of the workshop will be to define what training is important and essential to achieve useful and effective EWC's.

The workshop will be arranged in three blocks with review and evolution at the beginning and end. The blocks are:

The big picture - EWC members are always in danger of becoming bogged down in technical minutiae, in employer agendas, in narrow sectional interest. Trainers need to keep members eyes on the main purpose of EWC's and on issues of strategic importance to unions. Jean Claude will introduce a study by Sjef Toop which will help focus to this work. We will also examine some new case studies designed to help encourage a -big picture' approach.

Assessment - we will examine what needs to be assessed by whom and, crucially what needs to be done with the results. We have three assessments tools to explore.

Extending good practice- having agreed key targets, needs and materials, participants will be asked to consider how their organizations and they as individuals can extend their work to cover other groups. The role of technology, both electronic conference systems and the used of CD-ROM's will be examined.

  • emphasizing how they have managed to move groups on
  • any multi-nationals EWS training they have been involved in and how they have overcome cultural differences.

THE BIG EWC QUESTIONS

Aims To help you:

  • re- examine the way unions EWC's
  • explore new methods of discussions. Task In groups, think about the whole relationship of unions with EWC. Come up with searching questions about the purpose, structure and method of unions' involvement. Task 2 Groups will be asked to look at the questions produced by another group. Grapple with and group these questions, then try to come up with some ideas to help address them in new and different ways.
